The military base has a population of approximately 53,700 troops and another 14,000 civilians who work on post. Now hosted by Fort Bragg, the base is the home of the 43rd Airlift Wing, 23rd Fighter Group and the 18th Air Support Operations Group. Pope Air Force Base and now Pope Field is named after Army aviator 1st Lt. Harley Halbert Pope, who was killed in 1919, when the JN-4 Jenny he was flying crashed into the Cape Fear River.
Pope Air Force has many different missions such as providing airlift and close air support to American armed forces, flying all over the world on humanitarian missions, and air transportation for the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps.
